  OARJ: SWORD Endpoints for Repositories

  Extract from notes of a recent OARJ meeting. It would be worth putting this in the mix for any registry of repositories, open access or otherwise. Initially the OARJ project has been trying to identify repositories but how do we identify SWORD endpoints?   Extract from notes of a recent OARJ meeting. It would be worth putting this in the mix for any registry of repositories, open access or otherwise.

  Initially the OARJ project has been trying to identify repositories but how do we identify SWORD endpoints? This data is currently missing from the existing registries; also at the last SWORD meeting it was suggested that a registry should cover/include details of the relevant packages. Until such time as a registry exists then the broker will have to determine this information.

  A project progress dashboard for PIMS

  Peter Murray Rust's team at Cambridge use a really interesting tool for testing the dependencies between their various projects are working. Essentially the system runs automated tests over the code every time new code is submitted. This tool has a useful and visually arresting dashboard for instant assessments on the progress and health of their various projects. It is called Hudson: https://hudson.ch.cam.ac.uk/ and ...more »

  Peter Murray Rust's team at Cambridge use a really interesting tool for testing the dependencies between their various projects are working. Essentially the system runs automated tests over the code every time new code is submitted. This tool has a useful and visually arresting dashboard for instant assessments on the progress and health of their various projects. It is called Hudson: https://hudson.ch.cam.ac.uk/ and it is a vital part of their team meetings and introduces an element of a game into the team to ensure their projects look good on the dashboard.

  There is a possibility that we could use this approach for PIMS. It would be really useful to have a nice visualisation of project health and progress that could be used to encourage programme managers to ensure their information is up to date on pims and that there programme is well managed. This could be a useful standing item at team meetings and it could be used at an individual, team and programme level.

  We could use the following measures that are already on PIMS to visualise:

  Dates of additions, edits to PIMS

  Project documentation that is up to date according to PIMS timetables

  Recently added outputs

  We could add new information to PIMS

  Information on dependencies to other projects and linking it to those project statuses

  We could use information from elsewhere:

  Blog posts as a metric

  This could all be done in a lightweight manner with a relatively simple but visually attractive dashboard interface added to PIMS. This could be helpful to programme managers and could embed PIMS further into working practices.

  A JISC journal?

  There is an awful lot of good knowledge produced by JISC projects. This knowledge is frequently buried in project reports or if we're lucky published in underread blogs. We do some extraction of these lessons but perhaps a journal focused on publishing these lessons and knowledge to a wider audience would be useful. We could manage this in a relatively lightweight way by installing the Open Journal System and by asking ...more »

  There is an awful lot of good knowledge produced by JISC projects. This knowledge is frequently buried in project reports or if we're lucky published in underread blogs. We do some extraction of these lessons but perhaps a journal focused on publishing these lessons and knowledge to a wider audience would be useful.

  We could manage this in a relatively lightweight way by installing the Open Journal System and by asking successful projects to write articles to go in the journal. This could be a really useful dissemination avenue for them.

  I don't think this should just cover the research lessons learned but general approaches to projects (the successful use of design principles in the Clarion project prompted this idea, other good topics would be things like recording the process that a project went through in deciding to customise an existing commercial solution vs building their own). Strategic issues like sustainability and impact could be regular features.

  I would see the journal being pitched at the practitioner level but with short regular features that are directed at senior managers.

  A platform for people to submit ideas that they need funding for. Using a similar approach to http://www.kickstarter.com/ This could be for very small projects or larger ones, specific calls or open rolling processes. Once people submit ideas to the site then other people can choose to back the idea (i.e. vote to say it's a good idea) or choose to pledge funding to the idea. There would be the ability to comment on ...more »

  Once people submit ideas to the site then other people can choose to back the idea (i.e. vote to say it's a good idea) or choose to pledge funding to the idea. There would be the ability to comment on the idea and question it. We could also incorporate a mechanism where an idea can get assembled on the site e.g. people can say I need this person, this expertise, this issue addressed to further this idea and other people in the community could help with this.

  Naturally we would need to moderate the site extremely closely and assign the ability to pledge money carefully. We would also need to consider how popular ideas are evaluated and assigned funding.

  Online course for jisc infonet

  It has been suggested to me that it would be good to have an open course that took you through the variety of content that is in infonet and had quizzes etc. This could be done in a braod way for all their content or in a specific way for their specific content e.g. the forthcoming repositories infokit.

  Would possible be good to have an online forum where people can trade tasks for project management in JISC projects (or maybe wider). This would help projects who are looking for mutual evaluation, peer review, steering group members, critical friends, even tasks related to events.

  Scoping How we Navigate the Information Environment and How What we Have Fits

  There is a big piece of work to be done in SIS about how we navigate the information environment and I wonder whether this is going to be covered to a large degree by the IE technical review. So, is the web a registry? Do we need to have big central services or can we have interoperable, dynamically composed micro services that exist symbiotically in a virtual ecosystem being born and dying as they are needed, being ...more »

  There is a big piece of work to be done in SIS about how we navigate the information environment and I wonder whether this is going to be covered to a large degree by the IE technical review. So, is the web a registry? Do we need to have big central services or can we have interoperable, dynamically composed micro services that exist symbiotically in a virtual ecosystem being born and dying as they are needed, being fed by user need?

  UKOLN currently have the IE demonstrator to bring all this 'stuff' together so what happens with the RI projects and various other 'service' projects to bring together what we have created into something that has meaning instead of fragments of usefulness that operate autonomously? How have we done on the IE demonstrator? What would we need to change to get concrete outputs? Are the changes we are making on SIS going in the right direction?

  RELI: Creation of a Central License Registry

  More detail on this is contained in the RELI final report. The estimated cost would be £25K to £75K and the system would allow users at a variety of levels to see what license was associated with a resource using a simple traffic light system or some other form of icons. Having discussed this with Liam Earney, a first step could be to fund having the demonstrator on the JISC Collections website and have JISC Collections ...more »

  More detail on this is contained in the RELI final report. The estimated cost would be £25K to £75K and the system would allow users at a variety of levels to see what license was associated with a resource using a simple traffic light system or some other form of icons. Having discussed this with Liam Earney, a first step could be to fund having the demonstrator on the JISC Collections website and have JISC Collections staff code up appropriate licenses to demonstrate how useful a license registry could be to librarians and publishers. Coupled with promotion by JISC Collections at appropriate events and groups, this could gain the momentum to drive demand from librarians and support of ONIX-PL licenses by publishers. Costs need to be established from the developers of the demonstrator as to how much this work would cost.

  It is important to state that a central registry is a good few years off. Support is needed first for electronic licenses and their use or the registry will not be well used.

Librarians need to put pressure on publishers to provide their licences in ONIX-PL format as well as in print. Librarians need to put pressure on publishers to provide their licences in ONIX-PL format as well as in print. This should be considered by publishers to be an absolutely standard requirement, just as a licence in printed form is today. Only when that occurs is a fully fledged licence registry service likely to emerge. It would be good for JISC to find ways of bringing librarians together to do this as a group - could it be part of LOTF?

  It is clear that the people in publishing with whom librarians typically have contact (i.e., sales people) have little understanding of licences and licensing issues.   Consistent Use of DOIs

  From RELI: one of the issues they had with identifying journal artciles and the license they are associated with is the consistent use of DOIs as identifiers. CrossRef goes a long way to addressing this but there is still inconsistency and specific cases where CrossRef cannot help. More detail is on page 11 of the RELI final report (I can't quote it as Ideascale won't let me!). I am sure this is not just limited to ...more »

  UK Federation Attribute Values

  From the RELI project but applies to others. RELI simply needed consistent attribute values to define a user role (eg 'student', 'staff', 'alumni'). Currently this does not exist as institutions can provide what values they want for the role, although there are recommendations. RELI, to some extent, do not mind what these values are as long as they can map to a role in an ONIX-PL license.

  Business case is that repository is best place to put REF resources. While a CRM is the best place to keep track of the lecturer to make sure they put their content in the repository. This should set out what we have found in our studies and the requirements, it should set out what JISC is doing e.g. post cancellation access, point to key places for advice ( eg JISC Collections/Content Complete/Our programmes).   This is not a new idea as such and is something Neil G and I have discussed but to lodge it here so we don't forget it.

  We need to have an e-journals archiving strategy for HE. This should set out what we have found in our studies and the requirements, it should set out what JISC is doing e.g. post cancellation access, point to key places for advice ( eg JISC Collections/Content Complete/Our programmes). It should consult with the community on their requirements and set out a way forward and ensure everyone that needs to know knows. Perhaps working with SCONUL/RLUK/JISC Collections/BL is the best way forward. I think this is a strategic priority and should be addressed within the next couple of months and taken forward over the next 6 months.

  ( as an aside there is maybe a REQUIREMENT TO FEED INTO OUT FUTURE SERVICE REQUIREMENTS TOO...e.g should we have a service that gives this kind of advice ? Perhaps it is a service on digital collection management for universities and colleges - so it is the Library, and the repository etc and thinking about managing a digital collection widely for R and L. Should we be making UKOLN do this, or Infonet? )
